Dealing with the Loss of Your Cat

Dealing with the loss of a dear pet can be a devastating and emotional time for you and your family. It's never easy to lose someone or something we hold dear in our hearts.

Pets can so closely weave themselves into the fabric of our lives and ingratiate themselves to the point that we don’t see them as animals, but as an important member of our family.

Everyone deals with loss and grieving in their own way, and all people express their grief in different ways. Some people want to get another pet immediately; some want to wait for several months or years.

Cats each have their own distinct personalities and should be remembered for the love and joy they bring into our lives. One cat cannot replace another, but there's room in all of us to love and cherish another dear pet that could use a good home.
Keeping photos or mementos of your recently departed pet can keep them alive and their memories fresh in our minds.

A planted bush or flower that blooms every year can be a loving reminder, as can a plaque or special photo album. If you have your pet cremated and keep the ashes, finding a beautiful urn or resting place for your cat can keep them present in your life (on your mantel or bookshelf).

In any case, give yourself the time that YOU need to come to terms with your loss. Take your stages of grief one step at a time. Don’t hurry it along. You’ll be able to let another pet into your life only when YOU are ready for it.
