Anxious Behavior in your Cat

Why is your cat anxious and how can you help your pet?

A number of things can make our pets anxious and they react in what we would consider strange ways.

It is a common occurrence for a cat to get stressed during big events like:

  • Move into a new house or apartment
  • New baby
  • Addition to pet household
  • Care-taker people start a new job or shift work
  • Care-taker people get ill

Even little things like their people going on vacation for several days and leaving the cat in someone else’s charge can cause a disruption in their lives.

Sometimes cats will manifest this behavior by ripping their fur out in splotches and leaving raw bloody patches behind. Sometimes they will refuse to use the litter box and make deposits elsewhere in the house – usually in a place where their people cannot fail to get the message. Sometimes they’ll shred things in the house or scatter dried flowers or yarn all over the house – whatever they can get their hands on to leave their people a message.

For instance, our dear departed friend, BooBoo (a pure-bred Seal-Point Siamese) used to leave presents on my husband’s pillow when we’d go on vacation. This happened several times and he would be furious with her, but in 18 years the only time she did this was after she saw him taking the suitcases out of the house. We started hiding the suitcases to pack and then I’d keep BooBoo occupied while he snuck the suitcases out the door – that was the end of the presents, but certainly not the end of her anxiety and stress when we weren’t found anywhere in the house.
