Litter Box Issues and Questions

Because cats are fastidious, they will use a litter box from the time they’re quite small kittens. They learn to use the litter box by watching their mothers, and a healthy cat will not soil a sleeping or eating area.

If your cat suddenly starts scratching outside his or her litter box, or uses another area of the house for elimination…this is a sign that something isn’t right - either the location, smell, feel of the litter, type of tray or a dirty litter box can trigger their refusal to adhere to custom. Another possible cause may be your friend is unwell and this is the only way he/she can tell you they’re hurting.

There are any number of litter boxes on the market; here are a few types to consider:

  • Electric self-cleaning

  • Simple plastic tray lined with a litter box bag

  • Bionaire air purifier litter box

  • Covered litter boxes

  • Rolling litter box

  • Hidden litter box

  • Disposable litter box

With all the many types of litter boxes, there are even more litter types. Here are a just a few to consider:

  • Clay

  • Paper

  • Crystals

  • Scented

  • Odor control

  • Clumping

  • Non-clumping

Cats can also be trained to use the people-toilet. This is nice because there is no mess to clean up. Most cats don’t learn how to flush, so there is this inconvenience, but it saves on money spent on litter boxes, bags and litter, not to mention the time each day to clean the litter box as well as any residual odors from the box.
